WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR HOT WATER HEATER IS LEAKING

AUG 13, 2015

A leaking hot water heater is no fun, but it doesn’t always mean you need to replace it.  If the tank itself is leaking, there really is nothing you can do but, it’s important to remember leaks can come from other components.

Careful diagnosis just might just save you from needlessly replacing your hot water heater. Here are a few things you’ll want to consider if you think your hot water heater is leaking.

Check the Pipes

Your hot water heater will connect to both hot and cold water pipes. Before you decide that you tank is leaking and needs to be replaced, check out the pipes to make sure they aren’t the source of the leak. When it comes to troubleshooting, always look for easiest, and least expensive fix right off the bat.

The most likely place to find a leak in these pipes is at the elbow joint. A steady or spraying leak will be much easier to notice, however, a slower dripping leak may be harder to spot – and could fool you into thinking you have a tank leak.

Pressure Valve

Hot water heaters are equipped with a pressure relief valve that opens to let off steam when the pressure inside your tank gets too high. As the pressure is relieved, steam will be released from the hot water heater. If it seems like the pressure valve is going off too frequently, it may need to be replaced. Call one of our plumbers to check it out. Don’t put yourself in a dangerous situation.
