TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HEATING AND AIR SYSTEM IN TOP CONDITION

MAY 15, 2014

If you want to stay comfortable all year round, it is important to maintain your heating and air system and keep it in good condition. By caring for your HVAC unit and keeping up with a regular maintenance schedule, you can enjoy a perfect indoor temperature during every season of the year. The following tips can help you stay on top of heater and air conditioning maintenance.

Take Care of Your Filters

An HVAC unit is only as efficient as its filter. If you use low quality filters, or let your filters become clogged with debris, your heating and cooling bills will go up. Consider buying a high efficiency electrostatic filter that can catch even the smallest particles before they reach your living space. Filters should be replaced at least once every three months. If you’re using an HVAC unit 24 hours a day, or if you have multiple pets at home, consider changing your filters once a month.

Keep Your Unit Clean

The filter isn’t the only part of a heating and air unit that attracts debris. Outdoor systems can become clogged with pollen, leaves, small twigs, and other nuisances. When you mow your lawn, make sure that grass clippings aren’t blown into your heat pump or AC unit. You can fight algae and mold in the drain of the air conditioner by washing it out with a bleach solution at the end of every summer.

Pay Attention to Correct Installation

When your HVAC unit is installed correctly, it will run more efficiently and help you save money on energy bills. Every outdoor heat pump or AC unit should be on a level site with at least 24 inches of free space around it to enable healthy air circulation. If the terrain is irregular, you can use special concrete or plastic pads to keep your unit on solid, level ground.
