5 SIGNS THAT IT MAY BE TIME TO REPLACE YOUR TOILET

WHY SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR TOILET AT ALL?

One of the best parts of a fully functioning toilet is that when you hit flush, your toilet flushes. It sounds like common sense because it (hopefully) is. With that said, you don’t really realize how important that one function is until it is not operational.

While the everyday toilet is prone to the occasional clogging, a toilet in need of replacement poses more than just the inconvenience of a weekly unclogging “session”. There are potentially high hidden costs associated as well. An older or broken toilet handles water inefficiently. As your toilet ages, your utility bill rises. Not only that, you may have to deal with water leakage, odd noises, and more. And while toilet repairs may remedy the symptoms for a while, the constant costs and time allocated to sending for repairs may no longer be worth it anymore.

With all that said, here are 5 signs that it may be time to replace a toilet in your household.

1. Your toilet is clogging up at least 1-2 times a week.

Even a new state-of-the-art toilet is prone to the occasion clog every now-and-then, especially when things are flushed that shouldn’t be.

What you should be more concerned about, however, is when your toilet is clogging up multiple times a week under normal conditions. By normal, you should refer back to what your toilet could have handled perhaps a few years ago. Loss functionality as a result of time is a strong indicator that maybe it is time to replace your toilet.

2. Your toilet is constantly running.

Of course, a clogged toilet is a very clear sign that it’s time to switch up your unit. A less apparent sign could include the continuous running in the bowl. Oftentimes a symptom of a faulty flapper, this may result in extremely loud (and constant) noise, inefficiencies in performance, and higher costs. While simple toilet repairs may be able to remedy this issue, if you start noticing that constant repairs to this issue in conjunction with others are required, you may need to invest in a toilet replacement.

3. Your toilet’s porcelain is scratched and cracked.

While a crack in your toilet’s porcelain may seem to be an external issue, oftentimes cracks or scratches in your porcelain may have been the result of fractures within the porcelain near the tank and/or bowl. Furthermore, these cracks carry a risk of leakage around your toilet. Check for puddles around your toilet. Sometimes, the leaks might not be noticeable unless attention is given to it. A way to more easily and visibly test out your toilet is to put dye in the water of tank and see if any puddles near your toilet are also dyed.

4. You are calling a plumber frequently.

Plumbers are great resources for isolating various issues affecting the overall efficiency of your toilet. Whether it be recognizing small problems with your unit, to treating various issues, calling your plumber to fix various issues is of no alarm. It’s only when those calls become frequent that you may want to consider that you need more than a simple toilet repair. While of course, a plumber is more than capable of aiding in your toilet installation efforts, there is always the DIY toilet installation that you can pursue.

5. Your toilet is older than you.

This… may be up for discretion. A good rule-of-thumb is that any toilet manufactured before 1994 needs to be replaced. Even if your toilet functions fine, an older toilet will most likely not be efficient with your water. Federal law changes require that toilets sold in or after 1994 cannot use more than 1.6 gallons per flush. As a result, the older your toilet is, the greater the chance your toilet is not operating as efficiently as you’d like it to. You would more than likely not be happy with your utility bill.
