ENERGY-SAVING TIPS:

JUL 09, 2015

Saving energy at home is not only easy, but it will significantly help to reduce your monthly bills. We have compiled some of our favorite tips to keep you cool this summer, while still saving energy.

The best and easiest place to start is your thermostat. It is common for homeowners to leave their AC fan in the “on” position as opposed to auto. By utilizing the auto switch, it allows for your fan to take breaks periodically throughout the day rather than running constantly. Not sure what the ideal temperature to set your thermostat is? The higher you can set your thermostat without being uncomfortable, the better! We suggest installing a programmable thermostat to adjust your temperature when you are gone during the day. A few degrees can make a difference and will prevent your AC unit from having to work overtime to cool down when you return home.

Your air filter can often be overlooked but can have a huge impact on the efficiency of your air conditioning. Be sure to change your air filter once a month to avoid overworking your AC unit. In Arizona, the dust from monsoon season may have you changing your air filter more frequently. Dust can block the filter and make your AC unit work harder.

While a blocked filter can be troublesome, sun-blocking shades in your windows can greatly lower the temperature and add comfort to your home. By paying attention to the sunlight and how it is coming into your home, you can help reduce your energy costs this season.

Another simple way to reduce energy costs is to leave the doors to your rooms open Leaving the doors open allows for the cool air to flow easily through your home; however, do not leave ceiling fans on when you’re not in the room. Although fans can work great when you’re in the room to cool you off, they won’t help cool the room itself.

If you aren’t using the ceiling fans in your home, now may be the time to start. During the summer, switch your fans to run counter-clockwise; this helps to move the breeze around. It is also important to remember that fans cool people not rooms, so switch them off whenever you leave.

If you are running an outdated AC unit, it may be time to install a more energy-efficient option to save you the most money on your bills. Units 10 years or older should be replaced.
