HOW TO CLEAN AN AIR CONDITIONER

There’s no question that your central air conditioning unit is a vital home necessity during the hot summer months here in Phoenix. Yet many of us assume that simply changing the air filter every month or so is enough to keep the AC running at peak performance.

Meanwhile, a blanket of dust, leaves and other debris is gathering on your air conditioning unit itself. If you don’t do something to remedy the situation, it’ll bite you in the wallet. That’s because that dust and debris will cover your condenser coils over time.  When this happens, your AC has to work a lot harder to cool your home and run for longer periods of time.

If you ignore the problem long enough, it could even lead to overheating and a complete AC breakdown. That’s why it’s important to know how to clean an air conditioner. It’s not too hard to do it yourself, but if you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to call in a professional.

CLEAN THE AIR CONDITIONER COILS

You can buy air conditioner cleaner at your local hardware store. A can should go for about five or six bucks.

Before you get started, cut the power to your air conditioner by using the electrical disconnect, or shutting down the power via your home circuit breaker. Put on some gloves and eye protection and pull out your hose with a spray attachment.

You’ll notice what looks like a series of metal fins that sort of resemble a radiator. This is the area you’ll be cleaning.

Spray all the visible signs of loose debris from the coils. Next, simply spray on the coil cleaner and let it sit for about 15 minutes. You’ll notice it will foam as it reacts with the dirt on your coils. After 15 minutes, spray it off. You’ll want to repeat this process about once a year.
