TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR FAQ

FEB 26, 2018

Trenchless sewer repair is a revolutionary but fairly underutilized method for restoring and repairing pipes and sewer lines. But what does it entail and why is it a method homeowners need to ask their plumber about? Read on to learn all about trenchless sewer repair and how it can help you avoid the pitfalls of traditional sewer repair techniques.

WHAT IS TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR?

Trenchless sewer repairs first came on the scene in the late 1990s – early 2000s. And although it has been more than a decade, many homeowners still do not even realize that a trenchless sewer repair is an option when faced with damaged or severely clogged pipes and sewer lines. Part of the reason for this is that many plumbing professionals have still not taken up the cutting-edge technique. This is in spite of the numerous benefits to trenchless sewer repair over traditional repairs in the forms of cost and time efficiency. This is also all the more reason to do your research and hire a professional company that has experience with trenchless sewer repair.

HOW DOES TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR WORK?

Unlike traditional repairs, a trenchless sewer repair only requires small holes to be dug to the pipe. Back in the day (and still today, if dealing with the wrong plumber), homeowners were forced to have giant trenches dug into their yards when faced with the prospect of repairing or replacing pipes. The difference is two small holes being cut into the yard versus backhoes tearing apart a lawn. And the benefits of trenchless sewer repair being less invasive is only amplified if the repair work has to be done through hardscaping such as a pool deck, asphalt or concrete.

After the small holes are cut for the repair, special equipment is used to pull a large, cone-shaped object through the old, damaged pipe. The process breaks the pipe apart  — which is why it is known as pipe bursting — and at the same, pulls a new pipe into place. The new pipe is seamless and incredibly durable. Which brings us to our next question …

HOW DURABLE IS THE END PRODUCT OF TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR?

As mentioned, the replacement pipe laid during trenchless sewer repair is incredibly durable. In fact, depending on the type of pipe it is replacing and what new material is used, it is every bit as durable and in some cases even more durable than traditional pipe replacements. Here at Donley Service Center, our pipes are non-leaking, chemical resistant and come with a 25-year warranty.

HOW AFFORDABLE IS TRENCHLESS PIPE LINING COMPARED TO OTHER SEWER REPAIRS?

The price for your trenchless sewer repair will depend on a variety of factors. For instance, the length of the pipe to be replaced, the location of the section and the materials used to complete the repair all factor into the final tab. However, you can expect that in general, trenchless sewer repair will cost 30 percent to 50 percent less than traditional sewer repair.

IS PIPE BURSTING NECESSARY? COULDN’T PIPE LINING ALONE SAVE ME TIME AND MONEY?

Depending on the nature of the trenchless sewer repair being made, some plumbers opt to use what is known as a cured-in-place pipe liner. This type of pipe liner merely lines the inside of the existing pipe to seal over damage and corrosion. And while it is true that this type of pipe liner is seamless and relatively durable, the loss in pipe diameter can have long-lasting repercussions.

By skipping pipe bursting and opting for a liner alone (which may be advisable in very limited situations), you are ultimately limiting the capacity of the pipe to move waste away from your home. Further, that pipe will become more prone to damage later on as it will become clogged more quickly and more easily.

HOW LONG DOES TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR TAKE?

Again, this is highly dependent on the specifics of a given project. In general, however, you can count on a trenchless sewer repair taking about a day. When compared to the huge amount of time and coordination that goes into traditional repairs, the trenchless route is a hands-down winner. Not only will you have a fully functioning sewer system more quickly, but you will also not have to worry about investing even more time in fixing the damage resulting from a trench. No new landscaping, no repairing a driveway, virtually no hassle. The quicker your sewer line can be repaired, the quicker you and your family can go about business as usual and get back to living your lives.

HOW DOES A PLUMBER DETERMINE IF I NEED TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR?

Trenchless sewer repair can be used to confront a number of problems. Because of the nature of the method, it is used for repairs that need to be done beneath the surface of your property. Therefore, most of the repairs to be done are diagnosed by special video cameras. This enables plumbers to find precise locations of issues, accurately diagnose plumbing problems and give better recommendations for a plan of action.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF I’M A CANDIDATE FOR TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR?

Ask your plumber! When it comes to an investment that is as important as your home, there are no silly questions. If you have been told you need a sewer line replaced or repaired, a professional should be expected to clearly articulate which approach is the best for your situation and why. Do not get stuck unnecessarily living through the numerous headaches that can come with a traditional repair just because the plumber you are dealing with is not familiar with the latest techniques.
