Things to Know Before You Hire a Plumber

(PHOENIX)– With Arizona’s shortage of skilled workers, more homeowners may be tempted to

hire ‘that guy’ someone mentioned in passing. But you need to know who’s coming into your

home or workplace. To avoid poorly performed work- or worse- family-owned Donley Service

Center is sharing the most important questions you should ask before hiring a plumber.

1. Are you licensed?

In Arizona, the Registrar of Contractors issues residential and commercial plumbing licenses to

applicants who have successfully completed exams and apprenticeships or received technical

training credits/education. You can check a license and any complaints at Registrar of

Contractors website.

2. What’s the cost and how did you come up with it?

When you receive an estimate, ask for a breakdown of what is included and what is not. Also,

ask if the quote uses an hourly rate or a flat rate that won’t change due to labor costs.

3. When is payment due?

For larger projects, some plumbers may require partial payment upfront or halfway through

the project with the rest paid upon completion. Be suspicious of anyone who asks for full

payment before any work is done.

4. Who will do the work?

The person who provides the estimate may not be the person who does the job. Professional

companies have many licensed plumbers. You can call the company to find out the specific

qualifications and experience your plumber will have.

5. What if something goes wrong?

Before signing any paperwork, ask about guarantees and warranties- and get them in writing.

Some plumbers may cover parts only for a certain length of time while others may cover labor

only. Be sure you understand the limits on what will and won’t be covered.

This is another reason to use licensed plumbers in Arizona because they are required to post

licensed bonds ranging from $4,250 to $100,000. This money is required in case a licensed

contractor is sued. Again, you can check the Arizona Registrar of Contractors for a licensee’s

history.
