Water Heater Tips
EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN INSTRUCTIONS
TO AVOID DAMAGE WHEN LEAKAGE OCCURS:
TURN THE GAS OR ELECTRIC OFF:
Gas: Twist the dial on the top of the thermostat from the ON position to the OFF position
Electric: Turn the power supply OFF to the water heater at the appliance or the circuit breaker panel.
TURN THE WATER SUPPLY OFF
Twist the handle on the water valve above the water heater clockwise until it stops. (If the water does not stop, turn off the main water valve in front of the house.)
DRAIN WATER HEATER IF NECESSARY TO AVOID WATER DAMAGE
Attach a garden hose to the drain faucet connection at the bottom of the water heater. Run the other end of the hose to a lower location where hot or rusty water won't cause damage. Open a hot water faucet in the house to allow air to enter the water heater as the water drains.
ON MODELS EQUIPPED WITH RELIEF VALVE
Pull handle up to allow air to enter the heater.

| Water Heater Safety and Maintenance Hints |
|
- All water heaters have a safety pressure relief valve. These can be inoperative. Have the valve checked
regularly and replace as necessary.
- On natural gas water heaters, have the flue checked for safety purposes and ensure it is venting properly.
- Make sure the water heater meets current safety code requirements.
- On electric water heaters, make sure both electric heat elements are operational.
- Keep you water heater thermostat setting as low as possible without affecting your lifestyle or dishwasher operation. A lower setting can save you energy.
